Blown In Insulation

Blown in insulation is generally used in attics and walls that have no insulation. It is a popular alternative to fiberglass and uses a natural wood product called cellulose. Cellulose is a recycled paper material mixed with class 1 fire retardent chemicals. It is a lightweight easy to use material that comes in small compact blocks that are fed into a insulation blowing machine. The machine consists of a hopper to receive materials and a mixer and fan which blow the materials through a 4-5" flexible hose. You can direct the materials in any direction and cover flat ceiling areas with a dense layer of insulation. It can also be blown into walls and tight spaces where it would be impossible to install traditional blanket insulation.
Most of your heat in a house escapes through your ceiling and roof, so it is important to have a proper layer of insulation. We insulated our small bungalow style home in Maryland and the difference in heating bills and overall comfort is quite noticable.
You can rent an insulation blowing machine at your local home center and buy the cellulose material there as well. You have to calculate the overall square footage of the space and then read the manufatures coverage ratings on the materials to get proper coverage.
It is good to wear proper gloves, respiratior and a jumpsuit if possible for overall protection and comfort. Work smart and work clean!
