How to install a garage door opener

If you are attempting to install a new garage door opener, the best advice I can give you is read the instructions. I know that's not why you came to this website, but garage door opener manufacturers have specific procedures for installing their components.
Generally speaking though if you are installing a new garage door opener on a standard roll up panel garage door then the following guide may be very useful.
It is important to be very careful when installing a garage door opener due to the fact that there are mechanical gears and moving parts that may cause injury.
Make sure that the doors hinges and rollers are properly lubricated. There is generally never a need to adjust the garage door springs, unless previously damaged.
Make sure your area is clean and free from items that may get caught in the garage door. Then remove or deactivate any garage door locks or attachments that may engage during installation. Be very careful not to wear loose fitting clothing or any jewelry while making your installation.
Ok, begin by familiarizing yourself with the different parts involved in the process. Next attach the metal tubing into the power unit. Then attach the other end of the tube into the traveler piece. Position the traveler as specified in the manufacturers instructions.
Connect the chain to the traveler then loop it to the chain drive sprocket. The sprocket is located on the power drive unit. Then attach the chain to the traveler and adjust the tension to manufacturer specs.
Mount the header bracket to the center of the garage door at the specified proper height. Then connect the idler assembly to the bracket.
Raise the garage door and position the power unit using braces or a ladder. Mount the power unit to the ceiling or mounting brackets. Make sure you have a secure and solid surface to mount your garage door unit to. If you have hollow drywall surface you may want to straddle a piece of plywood across the joists which will give you a stable surface.
Once you have attached the power unit test your new garage door and make any adjustments so your door opens and closes and fits.
After you have connected the power unit you will need to connect the opener to the traveler.
