Plan and Build a Garage

Like just about everything else, if you want to build a garage you need to plan it well. Building a garage can be a great way to add storage space for you home improvement tools, building materials, ladders and possibly even your car.
Before you start determine how much space you will require, the style and shape of your garage and if you want an attached garage or a freestanding garage.
The next step in the garage fabrication process is to get a building permit. This may or may not be required, but check with your local city or county.
A good architectural drawing or pre designed garage plan is always a good idea. This also helps in determining the cost and site plan for your new garage.
Here are a few things to consider in the garage planning process.
Will you use your garage to park a car? If so how many cars.
Will the garage become a storage room or a workshop?
Do you need special work benches and how many?
What electrical requirements do I have?
How many doors and windows will I need?
Depending on your local planning department, you may have setback restrictions and or height restrictions to consider.
Obviously the size of the garage is probably the most important aspect of the project. A normal one car garage is generally speaking a minimum of 12 ft. wide by 22 ft. long. If you are building a 2 car garage the minimum size will be 18 ft. wide by 22 ft. long. Make sure you allow for car door space and any additional work benches or areas when determining the size of you garage.
