Split Rail Fence

Split Rail Fence

Split rail fence is time tested deisign that is durable and strong enough to contain most common livestock. Fence that is made of a split rail system means that is has vertical posts with thru holes spaced evenly apart. Horizontal rails are inserted in the thru holes during installation of the fence. Most common split rail fencing systems have either two or three horizontal rails per fence section.

Fence posts and rails in a split rail system are genrally made of cedar wood which is a natural insect repellant. It also fairs quite well in a direct in ground installation due to it's strength and resistance to rot.

It is very easy to install split rail fencing and is very popular with farmers or landowners with large coverage areas. It does require some finess and hard compacting to prevent settling. If you use gravel along with dirt fill it will help compact the posts for a longer lasting installation. This will help reduce settling or movement of the posts.

Split rail fence is generally 4' high with either 8' or 10' sections. It can be mixed or shortened depaending on the application and makes for a great pool fence or property border fence. Split rail fencing is truely a classic.
