silicone caulk
The uses for silicone caulk are far and wide including both interior and exterior use. When I was a glazier, I used silicone every day to seal windows and finish off aluminum window frames. It is perfect for tile, glass and counter tops and make a water tight seal. It can also create a insulation barrier which can be energy efficient saving you money.
Silicone caulk can be quite tricky to work with as it dries fast and is messy. It will take a little finesse to master the art of caulking no matter what type of caulk you use. Silicone cleans up with mineral spirits and has a little more smell to it than regular latex caulk.
Why should you use silicone as opposed to latex, well heres why. Silicone is more flexible, holds up to sunlight over time, is used for porous and non porous surfaces, and works well in gaps that expand and contract. Silicone comes in many colors to fit your project and comes in grades of silicone from 100% silicone to a combination or acrylic latex depending on the application. 100% silicone is the best choice for areas where water is present, like kitchens an bath rooms.
Before applying silicone or any type of caulk, make sure that your surface is clean, dry and void of any dirt particles. Cut your tube end on a sleight angle as this will help you spread the caulk. Carefully squeeze the caulk gun and apply a careful amount of silicone to your project. Move the caulk gun across your surface and apply an even bead of silicone. Once the silicone is applied you may need to further smooth the bead with a silicone application tool or just by using your finger. I generally wet my finger with water to make the bead a little smoother. Make sure that the area you are filling is even and filled evenly to prevent any water pockets or leaks.
