Choosing A Contractor
Home improvement and remodeling is a very challenging craft that requires skill, experience and know how. Choosing the right contractor for the job is also a bit tricky, here are a few things to look for.
First you should meet with your contractor and get a feel for his personality and style. Observe his reactions to questions to get a sense of his overall dimeaner. Prepare some questions that you know the answer too and see how they do.
A good contractor should be patient and considerate to your wants and needs. The contractor can be your best friend or your worst nightmare so choose wisely.
Make sure your contractor has a clean organized appearance because details are important and it shows that they care. Get references and job photos if possible. A good contractor will have a strong portfolio of work or a good reference base.
If your state requires a contractors license ask them for a copy of theirs any a copy of their liability policy. Make sure that you are covered in case of accident or shabby workmanship. Some homeowners policies cover this, but many do not.
Word of mouth is generally the best way to find a good contractor unless you have construction experience. I hear it all the time "I can't even get a contractor to call me back".
Being a general contractor and home improvement specialist is a tough business and takes years to even get close to perfection. most contractors work on very small margins due to competition, work availability, overruns and more. Make sure your contractor spell out the scope of work before the project begins. A good contract and organized plan should be an indication of the way a project is handled.
